Installation Issues

Q: The application won't install
A: Ensure you're running Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and have administrator rights. The .NET 10.0 Runtime will be installed automatically if needed.

Q: Do I need .NET installed separately?
A: No, the installer includes the .NET 10.0 Runtime and will install it automatically if not present.

Using Evidence Timeline

Q: Where is my data stored?
A: Case data is stored in folders YOU choose when creating cases. Application settings are in %AppData%\EvidenceTimeline\. Your case data never leaves your computer.

Q: Can I use Evidence Timeline offline?
A: Yes! The application works completely offline. Internet is only needed for checking/downloading software updates.

Q: How do I backup my cases?
A: Simply copy your case folders to a backup location (external drive, cloud storage, etc.). The entire case folder contains everything you need.

Q: Will updates delete my data?
A: No! Updates only replace application files, never your case data. Your cases, evidence, notes, and attachments are always safe.

Technical Issues

Q: The application won't start
A: Try restarting your computer. If that doesn't work, reinstall Evidence Timeline and ensure .NET 10.0 is installed.

Q: A case won't open
A: Verify the case folder contains a case.json file. If corrupted, restore from backup. Try clearing recent cases: File β†’ Preferences β†’ Clear recent cases.

Q: Evidence isn't saving
A: Check that you have write permissions to the case folder and sufficient disk space. Try moving the case to your Documents folder.

Features

Q: How do I manage people and aliases?
A: Open Data β†’ People to use the People Manager. You can add, edit, or delete people, record notes, and store aliases that can be linked to evidence.

Q: Can I customize evidence types?
A: Yes! Go to Data β†’ Types to add, rename, or delete evidence types. New cases start with default types (Document(s), Contract, Letter, Email, Message(s), Photograph, Receipt, Audio, Video) that you can edit.

Q: Can I drag and drop files into evidence?
A: Yes. Drop files into the attachments area in the Evidence window to add them instantlyβ€”they stay in your case folder and open with your default apps.

Q: How do I link related evidence?
A: Select an evidence item, click Edit β†’ Manage Links, then check the boxes next to related evidence.

Q: Can I work on multiple cases at once?
A: Yes! Open multiple instances of Evidence Timeline, each with a different case.
